Briarmeade Golf Club

Late Group

The Briarmeade Low-Ball began around 5 decades ago. The term "Low-Ball" meant exactly what it says,"Low-Ball". All you need to start a "Low-Ball" is a playing partner and two other players to compete against. Each team counts their lowest score on each hole; hence the term "Low-Ball". They played and kept score by stroke play only. This term means that whenever you swing at the ball with the intention of striking the ball (whether you make contact or not), you count one stroke. This made it very difficult for everyone to enjoy playing. Briarmeade has since adopted the point system. This allows all golfers regardless of handicap to be able to compete equally. If you make 18 pars in one round, you have made 36 points.

The chooser is usually your teams highest point player. He also is the one responsible for making sure that we play by the rules. He knows the rules and should be asked if any questions arise. Before a round a player is told the amount of points that he/she is down for (which equals the average of his/her points attained in his/her last five rounds). We use the honor system for any new player that signs up. You simply tell us with all honesty how many points that you should be down for. However, you will be a frozen player (a player that cannot help or hurt his/her team by more than 2 points) until he/she completes there required 5 rounds. Each team captain (their chooser) takes the number of points a player makes and subtracts it from the points the player is down for. This results in your total score. The player will finish +, even , or -. Each captain will total his/her teams points to find their final score. The team with the highest amount of points wins.

Our average participants per Low-Ball ranges between 40-50 golfers.
